Alan grew up in St. Louis, Missouri in less than optimum conditions where his tomorrows were never better than his yesterday’s. Raised by his mother and grandmother, he was taught the value of social responsibility early in life. His passion for justice and a desire to break the bond of class and gender emerged from his roots in Missouri as well as his education in a foreign white academia. Alan was awarded a Danforth Fellowship and went on to earn a number of graduate degrees. He has also completed additional work at Casa de Los America, the Casa de Africa in Havana Cuba a the Baptist Theological Seminary in Zimbabwe.
Alan L. Joplin is:
- A savant of the cultural ecology and social epidemiology of community life and homeless through life experience and a veteran of the civil rights movement
- An extensive traveler in humanitarian and educational pursuits throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and particularly Cuba, Haiti and Africa where he teaches as a visiting professor
- An academic with research, instructional and administrative experiences spanning 35 years in higher education and adviser/consultant to neighborhood, city and regional planning and national organizations
- A committed activist and radical democrat, who demonstrated an early interest in national affairs and recognizes the frustration of stagnation; the malaise of misunderstanding; the need to develop an intense commitment and a blueprint for change.
